Astra's obstetrics team looks after pregnancy from the first confirmed scan through to delivery and postnatal recovery, including pregnancies that carry additional risk. Our approach is straightforward: support a normal delivery wherever it is safe to do so, intervene when there is a clear clinical reason and explain the reasoning to you either way. Treatments & Procedures
Our obstetrics department offers comprehensive prenatal, delivery and postpartum care to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy journey. We provide personalized birth plans and expert management for both routine and high-risk pregnancies.

Normal (vaginal) delivery
Where the pregnancy is uncomplicated and both mother and baby are well, vaginal delivery is safer, involves a shorter hospital stay and allows a faster recovery. A typical stay is around two to three days.

Caesarean section (LSCS)
Recommended when vaginal delivery carries greater risk - for example breech presentation, placenta praevia, foetal distress or labour that is not progressing safely. A typical stay is around three to four days. We will always explain why a caesarean is being recommended.

Vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC)
For many women with one previous caesarean, a vaginal birth in a subsequent pregnancy is a reasonable option. Suitability depends on the reason for the earlier caesarean, the type of incision and the current pregnancy.

Newborn care
A paediatrician attends deliveries where indicated. Newborn screening, vitamin K, immunisation and feeding support are provided before discharge.

Postnatal care
Support with breastfeeding, recovery guidance, wound care after caesarean, contraception counselling and a postnatal review at around six weeks. Postnatal physiotherapy is available for pelvic floor and core recovery.
Your Antenatal Care at Astra
First trimester (up to 12 weeks). Confirmation of pregnancy and a dating scan. Booking blood tests: blood group and Rh typing, haemoglobin, blood sugar, thyroid function and screening for HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis. Folic acid supplementation. An NT scan between 11 and 13 weeks assesses early risk markers.
Second trimester (13 to 27 weeks). Visits typically every four weeks. A detailed anomaly scan between 18 and 22 weeks. Screening for gestational diabetes, usually between 24 and 28 weeks. Iron and calcium supplementation. Tetanus immunisation.
Third trimester (28 weeks to delivery). Visits every two weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly. Growth scans. Monitoring of blood pressure, weight and foetal movement. From around 28 weeks, a noticeable reduction in baby movements should always be reported the same day.
