Cardiology at Astra Speciality Hospital

Heart disease in India presents earlier than it does elsewhere - often in the forties, sometimes in the thirties - and frequently without the dramatic symptoms people expect. Our cardiology service exists to catch it before it becomes an emergency and to manage it well when it already is one.

At Astra we evaluate and treat coronary artery disease, angina, heart failure, arrhythmias, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and valve disease. Patients from Semmancheri, Sholinganallur, Navalur, Perumbakkam and Medavakkam come to us for chest pain evaluation, cardiac screening and ongoing management of heart conditions and their risk factors. Chest pain is triaged as a priority. If you arrive with chest pain, you receive an ECG on arrival - not after a wait. Meet our consultant cardiologist.

Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Come to Emergency immediately

Call +91 96771 11775 and come straight in - do not drive yourself:

  • Chest pain, pressure, tightness or heaviness lasting more than a few minutes
  • Chest discomfort with sweating, nausea, vomiting or light-headedness
  • Pain spreading to the left arm, both arms, jaw, neck, upper back or upper abdomen
  • Sudden severe breathlessness, particularly at rest or on lying flat
  • Fainting or near-fainting with palpitations

Heart attack symptoms are frequently atypical in women, in older adults and in people with diabetes.

  • Breathlessness on exertion that is new or worse than it used to be
  • Chest discomfort that appears reliably with exertion and settles with rest
  • Palpitations, skipped beats or fluttering, especially if recurrent
  • Swelling of the feet, ankles or legs; persistent unexplained fatigue; repeated dizziness or blackouts
  • Blood pressure or cholesterol readings that are consistently high
  • A parent or sibling who had a heart attack or stroke before 55 (men) or 65 (women)

Conditions

  • Coronary artery disease and heart attack - narrowing of the arteries supplying the heart; may present as angina or as a heart attack
  • Heart failure - a heart that cannot pump strongly enough, causing breathlessness, fatigue and swelling of the legs
  • Arrhythmias - abnormal heart rhythms including atrial fibrillation, which raises stroke risk and can be symptomless
  • High blood pressure (hypertension) - usually silent and a major contributor to heart attack, stroke and kidney disease
  • High cholesterol and lipid disorders - raised LDL cholesterol drives plaque formation
  • Valvular heart disease - narrowed or leaking heart valves, sometimes a consequence of childhood rheumatic fever
  • Cardiomyopathy - disease of the heart muscle itself
  • Peripheral arterial disease - narrowing of arteries in the legs, often a marker that the coronary arteries are affected too
