- Chest pain or chest heaviness, especially with sweating, breathlessness, nausea or pain spreading to the jaw, neck, back or left arm - see our chest pain evaluation page.
- Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the face or body, drooping of the face, slurred speech or sudden confusion
- Breathlessness at rest or breathing that is fast, noisy or laboured
- Loss of consciousness, fainting or a first-time seizure
- A fall or road accident with severe pain, visible deformity or inability to bear weight
- Bleeding that does not stop, vomiting blood or black stools
- In pregnancy: bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain, severe headache with blurred vision or reduced baby movements
- In children: breathing difficulty, unresponsiveness, a fit, refusal to feed or a fever with a rash that does not fade under pressure - see children's emergencies
Chest pain in particular is often dismissed as gas or acidity. It frequently is - but that is a diagnosis to be made after an ECG, not before one. When in doubt, come in.
