Pain affects all of us and pain management is an upcoming sub-speciality in medicine where treating the pain a patient suffers from, is given a specific focus, using specialised techniques. One could think that this is what has been done in the past by doctors and other allied professionals. Of course, that is true, but different specialists used to work in isolation to treat pain in their areas of expertise.
One of the problems with that approach was that one doctor’s knowledge and skills cannot possibly encompass all the different aspects of treatment of pain. There are also specific methods and equipments required for treating pain.
Diagnosing the cause of pain is the most important step in management of pain. We have to have the doctors with specific skills and examination techniques to be able to do that. Sophisticated imaging modalities such as MRI scanning might also become necessary. Also, in this day and age it has become vital for doctors and allied professionals to join together to pool all their skills for the betterment of patients. Teamwork is important and this team is popularly known in some centers as ‘The Pain Team’. This team would include the following professionals: surgeons, physicians, anaesthetists, interventional radiologists, pain nurses, physiotherapists, exercise and yoga therapists.
The methods and equipments used for treating pain include the following: oral, injectable and topical pain killers, physiotherapy treatments such as IFT, Ultrasound, TENS, Traction devices, Laser therapy & Exercise therapy, Therapeutic yoga, Fitness management, Targeted injection therapies and Targeted surgeries. Any center that deals with management of pain should have most these capabilities and experts dealing with these aspects. We at ASTRA Ortho n Spine Center are proud to introduce all these capabilities, experts and the pain team under one roof to provide a wholistic approach in the fight against pain.
